19 Oct Bourbon Spiked Butterbeer
Before our recent Disney World trip we made a decision to skip Harry Potter World at Universal. I had made peace with the fact the boys were too young to fully enjoy Harry Potter and decided to save that for a later trip. However, I had a hankering for some butterbeer. I tried a few hot recipes ( it’s October in Mississippi, hot drinks are a no go), a few that involved ice cream (too filling). Eventually I gave up and decided to make my own.
This butterbeer isn’t heavy like most butterbeer recipes I have tried. And with the option of bourbon added in it makes it just the right amount of sweet mixed with the smokiness of the liquor. I used Bulleit Bourbon because it has a wonderful nice toffee finish that matched perfectly with this recipe! And who doesn’t love a little bourbon in their childhood movie inspired drink?!
You could definitely tailor this recipe to a crowd by tripling or quadrupling it but I recommend making them 2 at a time like the recipe suggests for the best taste. I used icy cold beer mugs for ours but any large cocktail glass would work well! You could probably even trick a couple muggles by telling them it’s not Harry Potter related at all! Ha!
I started by filing each of the mugs with half a 12 oz can of AW Cream Soda and half a 12 bottle of Reed’s Ginger Beer.Then add 1.5 oz of Bulleit Bourbon to each mug and stir gently with a cocktail spoon. This alone served over ice would make this cocktail amazing for any party BUT I needed to make it even more yummy.
Now, you could totally buy Redi-Whip in a can or Cool Whip for this next step, but there is nothing quite like homemade whipped cream. And had I used Redi-Whip, my mama’s voice would of said “now you could just of made some from scratch as easily as all that Jessica!” Anytime I make whipped cream, my first step is placing the metal bowl and whip attachment for my Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer into the freezer for 10-15 minutes. It’s a trick my mama taught me long ago and it has yet to fail me! You want to make sure everything is chilled enough for the cream to come together easily. You also need to make sure that your bowl is good and dry too so once it comes out of the freezer take a paper towel and wipe the inside out just in case!
On medium speed I whisked 1 cup of heavy whipping cream until soft peaks formed. To that I added 1 teaspoon of Vanilla Extract and whisked that in. After removing my bowl from the stand mixer, I then used a spatula to gently fold in 2 tablespoons of Butterscotch Sauce and voila! Butterscotch whipped cream ready to top this awesome drink!
I used a large spoon to carefully add the whipped cream to the top of our mug and then used my cocktail stirrer to mix it just a little! Add in some crushed Werther’s Originals to garnish and you have a creamy, delicious cocktail just waiting to be enjoyed! Bourbon Spiked Butterbeer
This smokey, sweet and creamy cocktail will set any Halloween party apart from the rest!
- 1 12 oz bottle Reed's Ginger Beer
- 1 12 oz can AW Cream Soda
- 3 oz Bulleit Bourbon
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 oz butterscotch sauce
- crushed butterscotch candies optional
Divide the ginger beer and cream soda evenly between 2 large mugs.
Add 1.5 oz of Bulleit Bourbon to each mug, stirring gently with a cocktail stirrer.
In a chilled mixer bowl, whip the heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form.
Add in the vanilla extract and whip heavy whipping cream until combined.
Remove the bowl from mixer and using a spatula, gently fold in butterscotch sauce. Top each mug with a dollop of the butterscotch whipped cream.
Garnish with crushed butterscotch candies.
